East Side Community Garden. Unique to Riverside, this is the city's oldest community garden, having been around since approximately 1980. In 2004, the new Emerson Elementary School Principal and the Parks and Recreation Supervisor at Bordwell Park joined forces. With the Riverside Mayor's enthusiasm toward Sustainable Green, a joint
School / City collaboration was born. Today, the garden has areas for community individuals and groups. It has won national attention for it's 'garden to salad bar' participation by the Emerson Elementary students, five years in a row. We have a garden area for disabled students from North High School, next to beautiful sunken beds tended by a group of Taiwanese immigrants. Citrus, stone fruit and an apple orchard make our bounty year round. Flowers too. Roses and Iris… too much to mention. Come see us.
